Driven open quantum systems create an interface between quantum optics and many-body physics. We highlight two phenomena, which pinpoint the characteristic microscopic breaking of equilibrium conditions on a macroscopic scale: The creation of quantum mechanical correlations by purely driven-dissipative resources, and the fate of the famous Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition under driving conditions.
